Lock down regulations have required many people to work from home or in a virtual environment for the first time. Although it is now possible for many people to return to a 'brick and mortar workplace again, a high percentage are choosing to continue working from home. If you have decided to carry on with home or virtual working here are three top tips to help you to ensure you maintain a positive balance and work does not invade your personal time.
1. Follow a set schedule
When you don't have to work set hours, it is very easy to work more hours than you are contracted for. One way to prevent this from happening is to set yourself a schedule of hours to work and stick to them!
To make sure you complete the work required try splitting up your schedule into hours and assigning tasks to each hour. That way if you find that it is not possible to complete all of your work in the time you are contracted for you can speak with your employer and show them your schedule. Don't be afraid to speak up if you simply can not manage your workload within your hours and ask for help!
2. Have an end of work routine
It can be difficult to switch off when you work from home at the end of the day. Research has shown that establishing an end of work routine can help your brain move from 'work mode' to 'home mode' more easily. Choose an activity to start your routine, this will send a signal to your brain that the working day has ended. A few things you could try include:
- Have a shower or bath
- Go for a walk
- Do any form of exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes
- Write, draw or do something creative for at least 20 minutes.
3. Give yourself two work free days every week
Working from home means you are always tempted to do a little bit more on your days off. This can actually be counterproductive, not only does your home life and personal relationships suffer, your brainpower will too!
Additionally, you are far more likely to suffer from burnout. Research has shown taking time away from work can improve your ability to fulfill your role to a high standard. Taking time out to do creative activities can also boost your concentration and memory.
Remember you are in control! You have to decide to action changes if you feel your work life and, or workload is negatively impacting your home life and personal relationships.
